According to Pinterest’s About page it is a virtual online pinboard to collect and organize all the things you love, with the “goal to connect everyone in the world through the ‘things’ they find interesting.”

According to Wikipedia: A vision board-styled social photo sharing website and app where users can collect and manage theme-based image collections.

For example, three of my favorite image collections are boards I titled Stuff I Need To Do/Make, Tattoos, and Books Worth Reading. There really is no limit to the amount of boards you can create; Pinterest even offer some suggestions when you start out.

It’s a hot, new site that you simply have to be on. By pinning images from all over the web (or uploading your own images) you can create your own vision boards, be it for re-decorating your home, planning your wedding, or simply to collect all the things that inspire you, in one place.

You can either follow friends on Pinterest and “re-pin” images from their virtual boards, or simply just follow one specific board.

A “Pin It” button can be added to your browser to conveniently pin images to any one of your virtual boards. Alternatively, add a “Follow me on Pinterest” button to your website or blog (integrated with the upcoming RichWP FrameWork v1.5). It is safe to say that I’m addicted.

Besides all the fun you can have with Pinterest, the referral traffic is also astonishing.

News.cnet reported that Pinterest is the fastest growing site for referral traffic, rubbing shoulders with Google+ and Twitter. In fact, the referral traffic for LinkedIn, Google+ and YouTube combined pales in comparison to Pinterest’s referral traffic.

When you look at the stats, it’s not hard to see that Pinterest is rapidly climbing to the top of Social Networking Ladder.  During September 2011, the referral traffic for Pinterest was only 0,17 percent. Six months and 4000 percent more visitors later, the site’s referral traffic is at 3.6 percent; in the same league as Twitter (3.61 percent) and Google (3.62 percent)

Why are all these referral stats so important? Darren Rowse at ProBlogger summed up why it is vital to keep track of where traffic comes from: “There are almost always ways of growing traffic from unexpected sources,” be it by building close knit relationships with other bloggers or becoming more active on a social media network. In this case, Pinterest. Even without having a Pinterest account, the traffic spike to his photography site from Pinterest referrals was noteworthy.

There has also been some talk regarding the affiliate links in pins. Basically, if a post on Pinterest links to an affiliate program, Pinterest uses a tool called SkimLinks to modify the link and add their own affiliate tracking code, with a Pinterest ID. Hence, the affiliate revenue goes to Pinterest via SkimLinks.

The concern that most people have is that Pinterest didn’t make this practice public knowledge, even though they have been using SkimLinks from the beginning. However, their Terms Of Service basically grants them the freedom to do whatever they want with pinned images.

To quote Josh Davis from LLSocial: “I don’t particularly fault Pinterest for such broad language (in their Terms of Service). It allows them flexibility in deciding how to continue to develop their service in the future. This is true both in terms of how they display images and how they make money.”

Pinterest is, after all, a free platform offering free membership; they don’t endorse products, neither do they force their users to make purchases.
